The best of modern therapy is much like a process of shared meditation, where therapist and client sit together, learning to pay close attention to those aspects and dimensions of the self that the client may be unable to touch on his or her own.
— Jack Kornfield, A Path With Heart

Short Courses

I periodically offer short courses through UT Informal Classes or privately at my office:

  • The Mind and Mindfulness
Current research into the workings of the human mind shows that the brain is very resilient—we continue to grow new neurons throughout our lifespan! That means it’s never too late to change, never too late to grow into your deeper self. Research also shows that understanding how the mind develops can actually help you approach the changes you want to make. The process of change that comes from this kind of self-understanding becomes a process of mindfulness. Through understanding and working with your mind, you may free your spirit. In this class you will learn, in clear simple terms, about how the mind develops. And through a variety of exercises you will learn how to apply this knowledge to your life concerns.
  • Seismic Growth
Many people who have lived through a traumatic event such as the loss of a loved one, find that after struggling to merely cope, they emerge from sorrow not only stronger, but also more resilient, passionate, compassionate. (See post-traumatic growth.) Yet sometimes this enlarged sense of life makes it difficult to connect with peers. This class offers an opportunity to share deep conversation with people who understand the seismic growth of grief. We will talk about specific ways our lives have changed through grieving, about how struggle has lead us to growth. Employing lectio divina—an ancient spiritual method of using poems or readings as a jumping off point into meaning and discussion—we will dive into the depths of changed vision together. If you have lived through loss and feel you have grown from the experience, come share your growth with a community of peers.
  • Compassionately Managing Stress With Mindfulness Practices
The compassionate antidote to stress is rest or quiet awareness. We can approach rest and quiet awareness within our busy days without having to abandon our lives. “Serenity is not freedom from the storm. It’s peace within the storm.” Come learn the wisdom of three ways to find rest-within-busyness.
  • Coming soon: The Art and Necessity of Ritual
  • Contact me if you’re interested in being on the mailing list for these courses, or if you have a small group interested in taking one of these courses together.

Creating Rituals

Rituals are symbolic actions that bracket our routines with meaning and mindful intention, and that create a container for our big feelings. By acknowledging the deeper meanings and feelings of life with these symbolic actions, we consecrate our moments and our days, making the depths of life more visible and tangible. By thinking about what things mean to us and deciding how we’d like to ritualize them, we get more in touch with who we really are and what we really want. Rituals can be personal, creative, and expressive, and can be done alone or with others.

  • I can help you create rituals that are meaningful for you. I can help you write big rituals like a wedding, a funeral or burial service for a family member, a naming ceremony, etc. I can also help plan rituals for lesser-observed occasions and rites of passage such as retirement, a wedding anniversary, a death anniversary, coming of age, etc. Even personal events can be enhanced by creating private rituals to help hold them—a miscarriage, a hysterectomy, the beginning or end of chemotherapy, welcoming a new pet, leaving for college, etc. And I can help you become aware of daily routines that can become rituals when looked at from a new perspective. Anything is possible.
  • Priced by the project.
  • To discuss ritual writing or planning, contact me.
