When we have for so long been judged by everyone we meet, just to look into the eyes of another who does not judge us can be extraordinarily healing.
— Jack Kornfield, A Path With Heart
Life presents challenges every day—some painful, some frustrating, some scary, some exciting. Often we feel we must endure challenging times alone. Seeking help might seem frightening, weak, or shameful. However, we humans are social creatures and we all need each other. Getting help and insight from outside ourselves can be hugely relieving, and can shift our perspective in unexpected ways. A good therapist can provide support for healing, learning, growth, and change. Therapy can help with challenges such as:
- Painful circumstances—the need for relief—Life situations that hurt, such as the death of a loved one, divorce, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, illness—your own or a loved one’s, trauma, abuse, loss of a job.
- Dissatisfaction—the desire to change—A subtle or profound sense of discomfort with relationships, career, parenting, social difficulties, upsetting patterns, boredom, restlessness.
- Transition—a time to grow—Life phases that can be exciting as well as difficult, such as engagement, marriage, pregnancy, parenthood, new job, empty nest, moving, graduation, retirement.
- Awakening—a wish to deepen—A longing to reach for a full life through personal growth, exploring a calling, seeking purpose, fulfilling potential, living mindfully.
If you are experiencing situations similar to these, therapy may be of help to you. You don’t have to go through life’s challenges and changes alone.
